I'm starting to think my kids are addicted to TV. We have a very tight and limited schedule of 1 hour of TV a day each child getting a day of the week that they get to decide whats on. They also are allowed 1 hour of Wii a week and 1 hour of computer a week (homework time doesn't count). Once in a while if they ask I let them watch a longer movie for their hour and after the youngest ones go to bed the TV is under the control of Nate and I. Lately though whenever I say it's time to turn off the TV I get to hear, "I'm bored." repeatedly. Sadly me and Nate are just as bad at night if we don't have the TV on. The kids can't seem to find any thing creative to do, or to play a game or read etc. (those are all to boring). I feel like they want the instant entertainment of TV instead of the harder job of finding ways to entertain themselves and/ or be productive. One of the things I want my kids to learn is to be self improvers and hard workers and not to expect instant gratification.
So I've been debating going TV (Wii) free for a month (not permanently) to see if we can break the cycle. I'm hoping they will see that reading a book, doing a project, learning something new, or playing can be just as entertaining.
I've also thought about further limiting TV to times by having them do something productive while watching. Like they can watch TV while they sew, cook, exercise, or clean etc. I think it would help me to get more projects done too if I was typing, organizing, researching, crocheting, planing out meals, sewing or doing other projects while I watched TV at night. I think it would make my days much more relaxed if I have plans too.
A few other debates I have are: 1 Is going TV free ridiculous and mean momish when they all ready are following the fairly strict TV schedule we all ready have? 2 Nate is going to Korea for three weeks in March. If I go TV free would it be better to do it with everyone or when Nate is not here? 3 If I don't go TV free should I limit them to doing a project while watching or just stick with what we are doing now? 4 I admit that everyone needs some time to just relax and let all the rest of their cares go. If I go TV free or make it a productive time am I taking that relaxing time from them?
I would love to hear what you think because I am still in a severe debate with myself.
